I haven’t read a lot of articles because of spoilers — but I decided to read this one anyway (and tbh you didn’t spoil much by my personal standards lol) — and it’s a very interesting perspective.

Part of me wishes that they hadn’t resorted to a fat suit for this, but I also think it’s important to understand that this is a unique situation, with a well-established character and actor. This wasn’t a hey, let’s put someone in fat suit instead of hiring an actual fat person sort of situation.

Some people might feel that it would’ve been nice had the actor gained weight for the role instead of using a fat suit, but as someone who has battled an ED I am actually glad that they didn’t ask that of him… both because I think it further perpetuates the notion that “anyone can just lose weight” when celebs do this and because for him, as an individual, this would not be the most physically or mentally healthy thing to do.

So I am reserving judgment until I see it, which admittedly will not be in theaters. I suspect I will come out of it wishing that they hadn’t resorted to making him fat to make their point… because while I understand that alcohol abuse can cause this, it still makes “fat” a symptom, a “problem” that represents unhappiness — even if it’s NOT about that — to many who view it. It further promotes the idea that if you’re fat, you can’t be happy, even if that’s not the direct intention.

But we’ll see, whenever I finally do see it!
